About Ashford & District Road Running Club

The Ashford and District Road Running Club was formed in April 1988 to cater for the needs of, and to provide focus for, adult runners of all abilities who enjoy road running. In our first year we had over 40 members and whilst our membership has fluctuated over the intervening period it has been steady at about 60 members for the past few years.

The Club is run by a committee which is elected annually at the Club's AGM. All members are encouraged to attend this and the monthly committee meetings to put across their points of view and to offer their services and ideas.

Although we accept members under 18 years of age we usually suggest that it would be more beneficial to them if they joined a club that offered a wider spread of athletic pursuit. It is considered that 18 is a better starting age to gain benefit from what we offer. Our oldest member is currently 80 years of age and still going strong.

Our ability range, for both male and female, goes from beginners, event novices through to race and age category winners. We participate in road races of all distances, from 5 mile through to the marathon, across most of Southern England as well as such events as the Great North Run. Individual members venture further afield and run in other Counties whilst a regular visit, by a large group of members, is paid to the Majorca Marathon and Half Marathon.

As well as taking part in road running we have a large contingent who enjoy 'off road' or 'trail' running which cover various distances up to 50 miles and beyond. The Beachy Head and Windmill 'off road' Marathons are particular favourites of the Club.

As might be expected we have a number of members who are keen cyclists and swimmers and these brave souls also take part in triathlons and duathlons bringing in some remarkable results.

Long distance walking is also enjoyed by some Club Members who take part in 'challenge events' over distances ranging from 10 to 100k.

Entry forms for most events are available on club training nights although further information can be obtained from the club’s website.

Club Teams take part in the Kent Summer Road Relays and during the winter months the Kent Cross Country League. The Club plays its part with regard to the organisation of events within these fixtures by playing host on alternate years to both the relays and cross country.

Catering, in the main, for adults we provide social functions such as dances, quiz evenings and other relaxing/taxing events.

As well as taking part we also put something back into our sport by organising our own annual 10k road race each year.

We also organise a coach, each year, to take our runners and supporters to the London Marathon. Although we must consider our own Club Members first there are usually a few seats left which are allotted to other local runners, for a small charge, on a first come first served basis.

If you are interested in what we do please come along and meet us on any training night. You will be most welcome and under no obligation to any further participation. Alternatively further details can be obtained from our Club Secretary.
